From our first crossing to our wars the ocean remembers it all. Heroes, villains, and castaways lost to the sea are all keep in the memory of the endless blue.- Mark Humes,The Book Of Lost Verses:Book 9

In my recent relocation to Fort Myers, Florida I drew inspiration from looking out over the Gulf of Mexico. I pondered the thought of all the lost history that must sit on the ocean's floor.

It was at that point it came to me that time makes human memory fade but the ocean holds a record of everyone and everything lost in her depths.

I thought genuinely about all the lost stories of the high seas and what it must have been like to be a pirate on a tall ship.

As I meditated on all of this, a story came into focus.  A young girl took on board a pirate ship during a raid and raised by the captain to be the terror of the seven seas, suffering many scars from many battles she wore a dolls mask till she met her end having been sunk by the Royal Navy.

The story of her life played out in my mind in a blur of images, A lifetime in seconds. It was the final image years after she had died at the bottom of the sea that seared into my memory and I knew I had to create it.

So it came to pass that a simple ocean view became a mythic character who hand a full life in the universe of my mind and crossed the bridge into our reality as a work of art to carry a single message, the ocean remembers.

This work of art will be a feature in my soon to be released book, The Book Of Lost Verses: Book 9 that has a tentative release date of November 2018 and is currently available as a print at Mark Humes Gallery.
